General Fallout Mods and Tools to avoid and why

Post by Ivanhoe1955SI »

Part 1 here for Fallout 4 only (WIP)

Mods I avoid (including why)
Oversized textures (includes upscaled too)
I use a full HD device (1920x1080) a majority of 2K textures is okay, 4K and 8K only for special things
Any mods that edit timescale
Vanilla script for example are based on Vanilla timescale and may break with higher or lower
ENB Boost
This is completely unnecessary on Fallout 4 and unsupported.
Official HD Texture pack
Not significant better than Vanilla and not worth the higher VRam usage
Armor and weapon keywords
Armorsmith extended
At the start of modding Fallout these were the only possibilities for modder to add things. But time changed and these mods are extremely outdated and can even break your game
If you have mods requiring Armor and weapon keywords and Armorsmith extended than take a look here: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/40752
Scrap everything
This mod breaks precombined meshes in settlements. If you want to scrap more than vanilla but less than Scrap everything use this instead: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/58757
NAC and NAC x
Performance intensive, riddled with bugs (at least in my game)

Mods that need special attention, only use if you know to handle the consequences
Beantown Interiors Project
I read it can break precombines, that is wrong, it surely breaks them. Even with patches I got floating rocks invisible walls and meshes even there where I never expected them to be. Use at your own risk
South of the sea
I was sad this didn't work correct but it was very buggy and causes crashes due to deleted navmesh. I never tested the new mod South of the sea - Atoms Storm https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/63152 but this seams to work better.
PipBoy Flashlight
Never ever use this with the activated shadow options. But if you like Slideshows, you can try. Shadows kill performance even on better systems than mine

Tools I avoid (including why)

Total
Mod Organizer 1
there is no need to use it any longer
zEdit
I use xEdit instead
Mator Smash
because it is outdated and at least has broken my game, I instead use Bashed patch but try to use it wisely

Parts of the tools
Loot
I use it only to find warnings and patches, but I order my mods via hand
Fallrim Tools for Save cleaning.
If you have a good load order and as few conflicts as possible, there is no need to use it.

If you have questions, ask away if I can I answer
