Speaking of myself...
My problem was getting the proportions of the characters right (and some other things). I often drew their legs very close together like in this picture from 2002:
About one year later, my style changed to this: (the arms are extra long allowing a wider grip and striking more frequently during combat)
Also the style of certain characters evolved:

Zedric and Dark Lady in 2005 Zedric's staff and Dark Lady's armor in the pictures from 2005 served as concept arts for 3d models which I built many years later:

Nowadays, I mostly paint landscapes:
The first picture I showed you was not the beginning of my drawing "career". It all began in the late 90s when I discovered the anime series "Sailor Moon". I drew myself as a Sailor Moon character for example:
